LOWER EAST SIDE

“After my PhD, I moved to New Orleans, and I was so inspired by the sense of freedom and liberty there. And for me, Mardi Gras was this time when we masked in order to show our true selves. I liked that idea of kind of having a costume to show your true self. I was so inspired, I started to also approach my everyday dress not just as a costume, but as a genuine costume. Like a costume as a means of expressing myself. Then I started to see a more genuine version of myself.

“I think it’s actually benefited me in my work and in my life that I can be honest and vulnerable as well as playful and alive. My style and my dress are actually a strength and something that really, I think, makes me feel better. It allows me to show up in a more authentic way, even if that’s in a way that is over-the-top or bold or, you know, takes up a bit of space.”
